Sonder, a leading luxury and safety company, will target growth in the UK after announcing the closing of a A$35 million Series B funding round. Blackbird Ventures led the IPO round, with the participation of new investors including SEEK Investments and SecondQuarter Ventures, as well as existing investors. Along with the Blackbird investment, Niki Scevak, Blackbird partner and co-founder, will join the Sonder board.
Sonder will use the additional capital to invest in product improvements across its safety, medical and mental health platform, and further grow its customer base across medium and large organizations in Australia and New Zealand. The company is also seeking growth opportunities within SMEs and international markets, including the UK.
Founded in 2017 by Craig Cowdrey, Christopher Marr, and Peter Burnheim, Sonder is on a mission to reduce the complexity of the healthcare landscape by providing a single entry point for employee and student care. Certified by the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS), Sonder supports nearly half a million members, primarily across Australia and New Zealand. Clients include Woolworths Group, PwC, University of Sydney, Allianz, Hoyts, Toll Group, Probe, NRMA and NSW Government
Sonder co-founder and CEO, Craig Cowdrey, said the funding continues a proud track record of achievement and support from major investors, and will support the delivery of the Sonder platform to more people in need of support.
“The current system is down. There are a lot of hindrances when asking for support, especially when there are so many issues. This is despite Record productivity losses Because of mental health issues in the workplace and the fact that employees increasingly expect employers to make well-being a priority in the workplace. Our research shows that the volume 92% of employees think it’s important to the next employer to provide welfare support.”
“It is more than just mental health, there is a need for comprehensive wellbeing support that is easily navigated and always available. It is more important than ever that students, staff and their families receive immediate, accessible, 24/7, safety, medical and mental health care. Sonder plays a role in helping organizations and their people meet the unique safety and well-being challenges in their lives that are exacerbated by the new world of work and study.
“Niki and the team at Blackbird along with our other new investors will provide us with further advisory experience, and their strategic advice and feedback will be invaluable during the next phase of growth.”
Blackbird partner and co-founder, Niki Scevak, said Sonder has tremendous growth potential and his company is drawn to the company’s unique blend of technology innovation, digital delivery, and human support.
“The magic of Sonder is her ever-growing ambition in the product and the company’s incredible leadership team. We have taken the opportunity to be a part of Sonder’s journey, and we feel very fortunate to join Craig and the team as they grow over the next decade,” he said.
Sonder’s rapid growth has included several recent strategic appointments, including veteran product leader Mindy Eiermann (former Intuit) as head of products and Brad Newton (formerly DocuSign APAC GM) as head of sales.
The company expects to continue its strong growth while expanding its award-winning luxury and safety solutions across the corporate, government and higher education sectors.
SEEK Investments Managing Director Damien Woodack said:
“Sonder’s unique and comprehensive proposal helps organizations reimagine supporting wellbeing to drive healthier, happier and more productive employees and students, and to meet the changing needs of today’s mixed workforce. We are excited to support Craig and the Sonder team in their next phase of growth to provide more people with the wellbeing support they need.”
