Aman Arora, the 48-year-old former Congress party leader, hails from a political family. His father, Bhagwan Das Arora, was a congressman for Sanam in 1992 and 1997. Arora the Elder was also a minister in 1992 when the Social Democratic Party boycotted the elections. He died in 2000, paving the way for his son to advance into politics. At the time, Aman Arora was only 27 years old. However, the trip was not easy for Aurora, who competed unsuccessfully for a congressional ticket in 2007 and 2012.
Once considered to be very close to Captain Amarinder Singh, Aman Arora left Congress and joined the AAP in 2016 ahead of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. He says he was influenced by the ideology of AAP Chairman, Arvind Kejriwal and his dedication to bringing about change in the political system.
In 2017, Arora of Sanam won by defeating Congress Daman Thunder Bajwa by a margin of 30,307 votes. Bajwa is now in the BJP.
In 2017, Arora’s assets were around Rs 65.88 crore, while liabilities were around Rs 15 crore. By 2022, his assets increased to Rs 95.12 crore, while liabilities remained at Rs 20 crore. Arora chaired the AAP Election Campaign Committee in the 2019 Lok Sabha election in which Bhagwant Mann won from the Sangrore seat. However, in Sangrove’s recent parliamentary referendum, his constituency could give the AAP the lead with only 1,400 votes.
A Day in the Life: Arora was appointed to the Cabinet in July when the government was in expansion mode rather than in March, right after the party came to power. As a Cabinet Minister, he comes to his constituency on weekends while working in his office in Chandigarh, visits different parts of the state and completes other responsibilities as well.
He says, “My office in Sonam has been in operation for a long time and people visit it for their daily work. There is a staff of about 13-14 people in this office always available to fans 24/7. However, I meet people on weekends in Sonam. I’m the same human year as I used to be before.”
He runs a charity hospital in Sonam where people come to avail services at subsidized rates. He says, “I learned social service from my father, I’m just carrying on his legacy.”
Work done: He says he has managed to simplify ongoing development work. He has bought fire tenders for Sunam and multi-core projects are in the pipeline.
work in progress
One stadium has been designated at ITI Sunam, along with a walking lane and two new bus stops costing Rs 23 crore. Other projects include the new Sub tehsil complex in Cheema, and a new stadium in Longowal. He says the Cabinet has approved the construction of 19 small roads and 13-14 big roads in the constituency, and few bridges will be built. All of these projects will change the electorate’s outlook. In addition, sewer expansion works are being carried out to provide relief to the city area.

“In the urban housing development sector which is my portfolio, unauthorized colonies will be a thing of the past now in Punjab. Legal colonies will be promoted. We are working on an overhaul of the urban development plan.”
Challenges: We came to power with the support of the masses and therefore we do not find any challenges.
Controversies (if any): Po graduate, Arora was a co-convenor of the AAP meeting, Punjab unit, in May 2017, but resigned from the position in March 2019 when Kejriwal apologized to SPD leader Bikramjit Singh Majethia in a defamation lawsuit.
